Self-compassion is a critical skill that is proven to improve quality of life in numerous ways. There are three elements of self-compassion – kindness to oneself, belief in a shared humanity (i.e. we are all imperfect), and the ability to observe ones feelings with perspective instead of being overcome.

Dr. John Gottman can predict divorce with over 90% accuracy by watching and listening to how a couple interacts with each other. During his research he observed hundreds of couples and noted their facial expressions, heart rates, blood pressure and the words they used. He determined that the greatest predictor of divorce is contempt and the antidote to contempt is appreciation. To learn more about contempt, the other three communication styles that hurt relationships and the solutions, check out the Gottman Institute blog here.
